Nice SG! I like modding (some of) my guitars and basses, and have had good experiences with Seymour Duncans. Everyone should have a P90-equipped guitar in their arsenal - the tone, especially for crunchy, biting bluesy rock and huge surf/rockabilly cleans - is unique and full of character. What value pots and caps did you use?

500k cts pots, .022 μF for the bridge cap and .015 μF for the neck cap. modding is highly enjoyable and i like the idea of personal customization. i seriously wish i could afford a vintage guitar (jazzmaster or jag) though.

agreed about the tone, nothing like going straight into an amp and cranking the volume to max with a p90 equipped guitar.

Can I just say that I despise idiot event organizers? My band just got SO fucked over about a gig we were supposed to play.

On a better note, picked up my new Gibby 333 yesterday, I'll take pics tomorrow.

how do you like the SD's in teh SG? I was thinking about swapping out my pickups for those same ones.

they sound close to perfect if you need a meaty single coil sound. a nice umph with jangle still present. cleans on the neck are beautiful. there are other companies that make p90's in humbucker enclosures though.

Gibson makes a P-94 which is a p-90 in the humbucker shape. Looks pretty cool, too, and they sound quite good, I've got one in an epiphone I have.

And collected it yesterday. Made for me by some guy with a streetside store. 3 mil for the guitar, another million for the pickups and the electrics...so 4 million VND total, thats ~$220, give or take. Plays well....took a couple of friends with me when I got it, they seem sufficiently impressed. Here it is: I'm hopefully meeting my teacher-to-be this afternoon.

I'm back in NYC for a few days and I went to Sam Ash for a bit to try out a couple of amps, see if I made a mistake getting rid of the AC15. The first thing I played was a Bassman reissue, and I loved it. Definitely a better sound than my AC15. I also tried the AC15 Handwired and while it was better than the AC15 I had, I still preferred the Bassman. So that will most likely be my next amp.

However, the store was closing so I couldn't play anything else. Two questions - how does the Bassman stack up to an AC30? And also, has anybody ever played one of the Marshall JCM 800s from the 80s, and what was your opinion? You can get them on eBay for about the same price as a used Bassman.

I like the Bassman over a Vox myself, but it's entirely personal. The Bassman just has that spectacular clean tone that so smooth and glassy, it's hard not to love. I would always get one of those tiny plugs and bridge the channels so I could do all channel 1, all channel 2, or a mix of both which is what I usually do. $5 upgrade.

The Marshall 800 on the other hand is a completely different animal from both the Vox and the Bassman. Big burly tones that will make some big time statements. It can really push the OD like no other, and while its clean tone is my personal favorite, it doesn't get that glassy clean like a Bassman. Really different animals here, I wouldn't ever think "i want either this or that".

Go to the Guitar Center at Union Square and try some more amps. In particular, the Marshall JTM45. It's a Marshall amp, but he built it off of the Bassman's wiring, they're extremely similar when you crack them open. IMO it's a good middle ground between the pristine tone of a Bassman and a slight push of a Marshall. Along with a Marshall DSL, it's the amp I've played the most.
