Sport coats and trousers of all sorts - too dressy for jeans.

And let's be honest - even though derbies with suits is technically not proper it is WIDELY done and I'm sure i'll do the same from time to time. Hell Parker was posting a bespoke suit with loafers over in WAYWRN this week to wide acclaim. I figure if all these young bucks think they can wear brown shoes out to dinner in the evenings I get away with a dressy derbie with a suit now again.

I can get that they aren't everyone's cup of tea. But I'm having a hard time understanding the 'too much going on' part. They have far less detailing on them than a wingtip. Could you say more about that part?

Should have said too much going on for me. I'm a no frills guy when it comes to lace-ups. Captoe or bust; no medallion or wingtip detailing. Then again I also rarely wear a suit, so I get more creative with my loafer game. I'd imagine if I had to wear a suit/dress formally everyday I'd be more ambitious.

I also agree with the Derby vs. suit rule. Don't think it's set in stone or is a live-and-die rule. I just thought I remembered you being a stickler about it in the past. Must have been confused.

Interesting - you'll almost never see me in a cap toe. I hate them in general. Something about that line straight across the toe seems so contrary to the fluid lines of a foot and a shoe. Then again, I'm not much of a derbie fan either - this is only pair number 2 for me. When it comes to casual shoes I'm more into loafers in general.

One man's trash.....another man's treasure and all that.

About the Derbie with suits rule - you are right I am pretty much a stickler about it I would never wear anything but an Oxford with a suit to any meeting that mattered. But I might bend the rules on rare occasions when the stakes are pretty low.

^^I hate that last (but then I only like GG06 and MH71) but I wouldn't hesitate wearing those shoes with a suit.
