Every SO I've ever been with has taken pleasure in describing her day in incredible detail. They've acted out the parts of their bosses and coworkers - even taking on different voices for each person they're portraying. And it's never a 5 minute thing, this always lasts 30 minutes or more - a one act play. Sometimes when I'd walk down the street with a GF I'd feel a twinge of embarrassment as they'd imitate their boss or coworker yelling at them. To the average person walking by it would sound like my GF was chewing me out. Not that I care that much, but I feel part of social etiquette involves maintaining one's composure in public. Her: "Okay, now I've told you my day. What happened to you today?" Me: "Nada, everything was cool. No problems, it was all good" Her: "Nothing?" Me: "No"

My ex used to complain that I do that too much. She was always like 'my day was busy. When do we eat?' I was clearly her bitch.

My girlfriend does this same thing. And whenever she'll say someone's name, she won't explain who it is. Since she tells me these stories every day, she expects that I'll remember every name of anyone she ever worked with. I don't, so she sighs, and then says "well remember the day that xxxx happened? That was her!" Oh, okay honey. Gotcha now.
But what are you going to do? I'm sure my girlfriend gets sick of my usual "well, I chopped 50 onions today.... oh, and Andrew made this really funny penis joke" but we put up with it anyway.
But what are you going to do? I'm sure my girlfriend gets sick of my usual "well, I chopped 50 onions today.... oh, and Andrew made this really funny penis joke" but we put up with it anyway.

I pretty much never talk about my work - it usually comes off one of two ways, either like I am bragging "so, I told that cocksucking commerical attache that I would call the fucking undersecratary and that he would remember my name when his retirement came around because he would get such a reaming" or it just doesn't really make any sense to anybody who isn't in my job "so, I spend the day cross referncing BOMs for jobs in my partners funnels, and then updating my excel funnel sheet to reflect system components"
so I usually say "oh, I had pretty good meetings" or "spent the day doing paperwork"
my wife doens't work outside of the house anymore, but she sits on several boards and does some volenteer work, as well as dealing with the 3 kids. but she will spend an hour telling me about what happened at skating lessons, or who said what at a board meeting. I find it endearing.

my wife gives me the full run down on everything that happens at work everyday. i've become quite adept at not paying attention but appearing to. just nod once in a while and say "those people are fucking crazy" or "how the hell do you work there" with alternating "oh shit" when she stops talking...those three phrases will cover 99.999% of anything she can say.

Prattle is an obvious indication of an idle mind. I generally just ignore it. Sometimes I get the chance to just walk away. I try to avoid being accosted by repeat offenders.
MrG, you're lucky.

I really am. I've heard other guys complain about their SO doing this, and I'm glad it's not something I have to deal with. If she talks five minutes about work it's a long one, and it usually means she's had a bad day and just wants me to listen and sympathize for a bit. There's very little of the gossipy, trite work talk I've heard others describe.
We generally have great conversations, and I can't imagine having to put up with mindless prattle to fill the voids.

My ex-GF used to do this to no end. Every annoying detail of every conversation that happened during the day.
Fallowed by asking for my advice, then totally ignoring it.
I would exact revenge by taking her shopping to ether mull over the details of every pair of oliver peoples and paul smith glasses I came across, to try one "1 more pair" for about 20 pair. Then off to compare the offers of Neiman Marcus' Ralph Lauren section to that of the Ralph Lauren store, and possibly Bloomingdales as well....well no definitely Bloomingdales
