I guess they didn't get the memo....
On a recent trip to Italy everyone was wearing this wash, all ages. Never saw the dark or raw.

It's from VMAN, a men's fashion magazine. The entire spread can be viewed here:

Most of VMAN's content likely won't appeal to MCers however, as it's quite avant garde, much like 10 Magazine or Arena Homme.

This is correct. Italians don't really do the raw jeans look (esp. with the blue blazer).
