Canadians and Australians in the eyes of the English

So I was watching old Hercule Poirot re-runs on PBS. It just dawn on me that the English tend to have more fondness for Canadians over Australians. Matter-of-factly, many of Poirot characters ended up leaving for Canada while in one episode an Aussie gardener was looked upon with derision. Why?

Australia was a prison colony. Also, a major reason for Canadian confederation was to prevent the Americans from invading a sovereign nation.

I think the English view Canada well because it took millions of Scots off their hands yet still retained Commonwealth membership.

I don't think most of us know much about Canada or Canadians. I certainly don't. Also, canada has Frenchmen.

This is a little simplistic, to answer the OPs question, IMO.

60,000 convicts were sent from England to the America in the 18th Century. When that was no longer possible, Australia was became the new dumping ground. While around 160,000 convicts were shipped to Australia over a century, that number paled in comparison to the numbers of immigrants settling in Australia: 3 million by the end of Queen Victoria's reign.

Canadians are like americans, only more kooky, less cocky and with better manners, I think everyone likes them. Not the french canadians though.

The Ausies are a bunch of drunken racisit convicts who too frequently beat us a sports.

In all seriosness I don't think we have strong feelings eitherway, we have a generally positive, if maybe slighty patronising, view of both as far as I am aware. We probably a more positive view of australians than some australians have of us "pommy bastards", although of course jokes about being convicts are mandatory.
I wouldn't base your thoughts on british opinion on Poirot re-reuns. Why the aussie gardener was treated with such distain I couldn't say, maybe it had more to do with his being a gardener than an australian.

Canucks and Aussies are like Brits but usually much better looking and less vulgar. I must admit that, in general, I love to hang around the Oz peeps, good anglo-saxon culture over there and they travel/immigrate like there's no tomorrow.

Sadly, yes, much of the hate mail is serious. And juvenile. Basically, the NetWebs at its best.
