Best leather dressing for "calf shine leather" (on a chukka)

Hi there,

I have a pair of Frye Manny Chukkas in Maple that are in a calf shine leather. I'd like to maintain the shine, but not augment it or throw it off, and would ideally like to not alter the color of the shoe. Unfortunately "calf shine vintage leather" is the most detailed description I've been getting.

I'm interested in conditioning and waterproofing the shoe. I figure for conditioning, you can't go wrong with Renovateur. For waterproofing/dressing the shoe, though, I'm a but more befuddled. Something like Montana Pitch-Blend is labeled only for use on "rugged leathers," and while this stuff certainly ain't cordovan, it's definitely soft and not thick like (for instance) Chromexcel. I've heard that Pecard's leather dressing is good, but that that will increase shine a great deal.

Any insight?

EDIT: Frye recommends their conditioning cream, but as far as I can tell this would be no better than Renovateur or some other kind of cream that's known to be better -- unless people have experiences to the contrary.

Sorry to be obnoxious, but anyone have any insight into this? I'm fearing the incoming weather later in the week

I would just use mink oil on those, it will condition and make them water resistent, not waterproof though, so keep that in mind.

If waterproofing is a must you could try some sno-seal on a small part in the inner arch and see how it fairs shine-wise.

Any conditioner or waterproofer you use will have the tendency to darken the leather. Also any good leather will darken when exposed to the sun.

Those are some nice looking boots. I would use Filson boot oil on them and then follow up with a liberal dose of snoseal melted in with a hair dryer. They won't really shine up unless you buff them like a mad demon. just wipe them down with a rag and brush them and you should have no worries there. Keep in mind they will darken up a bit but it sure beats the Hell out of having them water stain.

So snoseal seems to be the consensus. I'll definitely pick some up. And Crane's, what kind of oils/materials/solvents are in the Filson boot oil? Thanks everyone

Pretty much it's the same oils used to vegetable tan leather. It's good stuff.
