Proposal suggestions for LA / Long Beach

Gentlemen,

I live on the east coast and will be proposing to my girlfriend in two weeks while she is at a conference in Long Beach. Because she knows a proposal is coming, I am going to surprise her by doing it where and when she will not expect it.

I need some expert local advice on where/how to pop the question. I want to propose against a scenic vista, preferably with a good view of the ocean. Her conference (at the convention center) will end at 5pm, so a friend suggested the cliff at Friendship Park. I have never been there - would that provide a sunset background? I would love other suggestions!

Additional factoid - sunset should be about 5:59pm and she will have to travel from the convention center, leaving at approx 5:10pm

Queen Mary sounds interesting - I would love some sort of mind boggling view/scene, followed by an amazing dinner.

I would suggest heading south 15-20 min to the pier in Huntington Beach! The waves and sunset will be amazing!! You shouldn't have any problems making it there with plenty of time to spare. There's a nice little beach-front town to walk around in afterwards, with plenty of restaurants and bars.

Friendship Park is nice. I like the Queen Mary suggestion as well -- and it's walking distance from the LB Convention Center.

The pier in Huntington Beach is nice, but a scruffy way with lots of surfer bars, etc. A cool place to hang out, but I don't know whether it's what you have in mind. If you were going to do the beach thing, I might opt for the slightly longer drive to Laguna or even San Clemente.

And Manton's right, LB Convention Center to Huntington at rush hour is more like 30-45 minutes than 15-20. It'll take you 15-20 just to get out of downtown LB.

This. The Crystal Cove area in Laguna is really nice and secluded and imo would be better for this than Huntington. Of course it's going to take alot longer than the 30-45 minutes it would take to get to Huntington from LB, so giving yourself more than enough time would need to be required.

21 and Lewis.

Schedule seems so tight....Queen Mary is kind of...out there...you have to park, then walk there and everything, not real spontaneous.

just go for a walk along the waterfront to a pre-hired boat or something with a bottle of champagne in there..

i am an lbc homie. with that time frame, you could do the queen mary ... it's pretty done, but pretty romantic, particularly the art deco bar. i think it's having some work done, so you might check. or you could go to friendship park in san pedro ... my choice would be more along the lines of abalone cove or the light house on the pv peninsula (or if you're perverse, the donald trump golf course!). or you could go up to the park at the top of Signal Hill (very close) ... great views from downtown la to catalina. following up on xericx' suggestion ... there's a water taxi in long beach that goes from the aquarium to second street to the queen mary ... that could be nice.

Am I missing something with all the references to a tight time frame? Can't you drive somewhere reasonably close (say, within an hour, which is sufficient for pretty much everything suggested), do a nice dinner and spend the night in a hotel or B&B?

Now I'm the one who is feeling homesick -- that's where I grew up. (Ok, I confess I live a bit closer to PV now than Manton does to Santa Cruz.) Lots of beautiful spots in PV, although again it'll take you 45 minutes to an hour to get there, given rush hour traffic on the 405 or PCH.

if you're at the convention center, you can reach PV pretty quickly by taking the bridges: gerald desmond/vincent thomas to san pedro. DO NOT get on the 405 at that time, no matter what.
