Its arse looks a little, well, flabby and Oldsmobil-y...otherwise, quite nice.

The Merc emblem is not big enough. I want one 12 inches across so that when I run over someone they will have the MB marque branded onto their entire face. Really, it would be an honor to be run over by a Merc. I've been run over by a mint circa-1970 Caddy and I'm pretty proud of that achievement.

I'm normally biased towards Mercs, as my 1st cars was one, and I always have at least 1 in the household, but the front lights on that are just disgusting.

Honda Accord, anyone?

I agree with Kent that the emblem isn’t big enough (although I don’t agree for the same reasons), also I think the grill isn’t big enough, although I do like that they tried to make it a bit pointer / sharper at the end, harking back to 30’s MB design.

I think the biggest problem is that the car isn’t aggressive enough. Sure, it has flared wheel arches. But that long swooping line that intersects the side of the car in a downward angle is very badly executed. MB just proved that when it comes to the design of side of the car, they can’t out Bangle, Bangle. Even though I don’t like the E90 3-Series, the line that intersects it looks a lot better than found in the new CL.

Also, the front lines aren’t aggressive enough either, they should have put lights a-la CLS, but bigger and sharper…but instead we get something I wouldn’t expect out of Malaysia, much less Germany. The rear lights are interesting, if this were a Honda or a Toyota; however this is neither and it simply looks like they had no idea what to do, so they just did ‘whatever’, and that was that.

I think the rear-side window could be just a bit smaller and the C-Pillar just a bit bigger, to differentiate the A-pillar from the C-pillar and give balance to the larger front-side window vs. the rear-side window.

I don't like it. Reasons:

- As in the S class the fender flares look forced, like tacked on elements. They look like someone just look the same shape as the wheel well, enlarged it and tacked them on the car.

- The front headlights look soft to me. In fact the whole front of the car looks cheap and generic.

- The wheels are absolutely atrocious, but they can be changed.

- From the side the front of the car looks too square, looks like a different vehicle than the sloping rear.

- I think the best thing about the whole car is the rear, but even that looks a bit too towncar-ish.

Nice.

But I still don't get the appeal of a big coupe. Not as big as a sedan (so it doesn't have the benefit of space/comfort) and not as fast as a sports car. It's the worst of both worlds...

It’s partially a ‘look’ thing; a coupe looks better than a sedan, i.e. ‘sportier’ and it does seat 4 adults comfortably, and has almost as much trunk space as a sedan. It’s also just as fast, or faster than a sedan. I don’t think that anyone thinks that the CL is by any stretch of the imagination a ‘sporty car’, although the CL65 AMG will be damn quick in a straight line. Jon.

I like the overall shape and presence. However, the front headlights look Mazda-ish, the rear taillights look too common, and the wheels look like they're having trouble supporting all that mass.

it looks like an acura cl.

as for the big coupe, if you are single or don't have kids, there is no need for a 4-door. coupes almost always look better than the sedan version of the same car.

Major screwup here: Why mess with a great thing.

It looks like a Pontiac Grand Prix almost.

My problem with the design concerns the rake of the front grille with the slope of the headlights. There seems to be some incongruity between these two elements. Additionally, the tail lights evoke the design of the Olds Aurora.
