I own a Tissot Le Locle, paid $320 US for it on Ebay. It's an extremely well made watch for the price point. Obviously it's no comparison to my IWC, but that would be like comparing apples with oranges.

Picked up the same watch at around the same price and for the money, I love it. Elegant styling, automatic swiss movement, just a great watch for the money.

Does anyone know if this Seller is legit? They appear to have DOZENS of this watch for under $250. And they're from China ... But a fake Tissot?

I wouldn't trust it.

Lots of shops selling Tissot watches in the department stores in Guangzhou, including TeeMall. I would guess that the seller is genuine, believe it or not!

A thread back from the dead.

For $500 or less, it is hard to beat the Seiko Sumo-- a world-class diving watch not sold by American dealers, but you can purchase from Japanese sellers. The fit and finish rival my Omega Seamaster.

Archimede Watches makes a nice Pilot watch that comes in right under the wire.

I have this watch and like it a lot.

I also get a lot of compliments on it which is always flattering.

except the OP is looking for something dressier (can wear to a night out or work), not a daily banger such as the sumo.

seiko spirit is a better recommendation

OK, curiosity got me going on this. Apparently there has been a lot of discussion on this various places. So ... proceed with caution. Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 To save you the trouble, the watch did turn out to be fake, start reading here.

Check out http://www.twsteel.com/ TW steel watches are nice, a buddy of mine just bought one you can easily get one for under $1000 most likely around $500. They are big watches in the 44mm+ range I believe and look quite similar to Panerai's.
