Career advice

Thread Starter
Hi all -

I graduated college a couple of years ago with a theater degree, and spent the time working at a Nordstrom in a retail position. I feel I need to make a move to get a real career, but am not having much luck... I've tried to get a job in personal shopping, but without clients already nobody will give me the chance.

I really love clothes, and during college did a lot in wardrobe departments for theater companies. Does anybody have any advice about what kind of move I can make? I don't want to stay in retail, but with my background I just don't know where to go!

How good are you at sales? (Like convincing people to buy, not just serving at a counter) If I were in your position I would go to every high-end or department store in town and offer them a deal: They offer a by-appointment-only personal shopping service to VIPs. The service costs $150, which you split 50-50 with the store. Because its by appointment you can move between 15 or so stores, and as long as you have a bit of charm and know you way around fashion theory, you should be able to earn quite a bit. The store gets to offer a high-quality service and you get to work your magic on people. Additionally once you have a happy client or two, slip them a personal contact number let them call you when ever they want advice. You can kit them out each season, but charge it to your personal account then invoice them at a 30% mark up.

go back to school and study something useful, like your father told you to do in the first place

I think that will be difficult as most places offer that service in house and almost always hand it off to relatives of management who are otherwise unemployable.

To OP, do you have any skills?
