shocks are one of those parts which you don't *necessarily* need to replace immediately, even if they are leaking. Do you notice a bad or bouncy ride? Considering that shocks leaking is neither stoppable or repairable once it starts (they require replacement only), you can wait as long as your patience for boingy rides lasts. Some mechanics will give you fears that they will completely seize up but this is ridiculously unlikely. Also, lets say only one shock is leaking, and the replacement you want is not the same as stock. It might be better to wait and replace L and R with the same model shock. And lastly, never go to Midas for anything. ANYTHING. There is not a single thing they can do with a competence rate of more than 10%. NEVER GO THERE.

You do need to replace shocks if they are bad... it can lead to bigger issues, but then again it is an old car so I guess you can ignore it.

A few people I know recommended me to a local mechanic who has a reputation for being honest and doing work on the cheap, I'll probably give him a shout and see what he says.

Nooooo you are getting ripped off, check with another shop asap. Unfortunately this happens to many people when they know nothing about cars.
