Why do people use the word "like" so much?

I've noticed that almost everyone at around age 25 or younger randomly includes the word "like" into just about sentence. I haven't noticed anyone older talking like this. I know I've caught myself doing it as well. Where does this come from?

I put it down to a lack of vocabulary. I usually end up saying "like" because I can't think of a suitable synonym.

It's a verbalized pause.

It's usually when people have to pause and aren't clear on what they're going to say next I think. It is annoying. It's funny though I haven't noticed anyone older than 25 saying it.

I just assumed they enjoyed using similies, but then I rarely care what people under 25 have to say.

I just had a long train ride next to three girls and every other word was "like" and sometimes twice back-to-back. I almost caught a case.

people that overuse "like" also seem to overuse "you know"

like, you know, totally!

Disagree regarding lack of vocabulary. I have a vocabulary strong enough that I get made fun of for using obscure words in regular speech. But I say "like" far too often.
