Ah, well that explains it even more.

The Dinobots are big crowd pleaser. Even when they killed off most of the G1 characters in the 1986 animated movie, they let the Dinobots survive.


The original animated movie is awesome. The first half-an-hour I could watch over and over again.

Bay's movies are generally terrible. However, the second has some very appealing scenes and moments for the died-in-the-wool Transformers fan, even if it sucks overall. If you can, watch the sequence that begins with Sam's rescue from interrogation by Megatron and carried through the ensuing forest battle between Optimus Prime and three Decepticons (including Megatron and Starscream) at the same time.


I had one of these. He did not last very long in imaginary battle against the Transformers, though. Even Bumblebee made short work of him, what with being mobile and armed.

The Transformers only took on Earth forms to hide their existence at the very beginning of events in the G1 storyline (after being woken up from stasis lock). Soon after, the jig was up and people all over the world knew there were giant transforming robots fighting each other in their backyards. There was even government coordination. After that point, alternative vehicle modes only offered individual, temporary camouflage (at first blush, a truck is just a truck, even if you know some of them might turn into robots). So, Autobots and Decepticons who later arrived on Earth or who were later created often took alternative vehicle modes that had advantages other than disguise. The Dinobots, for example, were not created by the Autobots to hide incognito--rather, the idea was to imbue them with powerful alternative modes inspired by Earth's dinosaurs. Many later Transformers simply kept their Cybertronian forms. Why did Optimus Prime stay a big honking truck after the Transformers were discovered? Maybe even Cybertronians think big honking trucks are freaking awesome. It's often overlooked that Transformers are people, even if they are not human. Many show a great appreciation for various aspects of Earth culture, so it isn't surprising they'd pick up a thing or two. I always thought it was particularly sinister that Megatron turned into a handgun. It's all perfectly sensible.
