Oki-Ni and customs

I'm thinking of putting in an order at Oki-Ni.

Can anyone speak from experience about ordering and customs? Have you been hit with customs bills? How is the cost delivered - charged to your CC? Were you hit for the full value of the item, or the sale price? How long after purchase were you hit? Was anyone NOT hit with customs?

I ordered something a month ago and didn't get hit by customs.

I ordered a Buzz Rickson Jacket from Oki Ni. First I had to fax information to DHL about the material and country of original manufacturer. Then they wanted me to fax a copy of my Driver's license and Social Security card. I politely declined and asked them to return it to the sender. Only to receive a bill from DHL a month later for $45. I have made plenty of purchases from other UK vendors and never had any issues (no customs charges either). However the other companies I have ordered from have all used Royal Air Mail. I think the problem was DHL. Maybe they have changed carriers for International orders as this was a year ago? If not I would request they use Royal Air or FedEx - avoid DHL! Hope that helps.

There is no longer DHL delivery in the U.S I ordered a few things over the holiday and it was delivered by UPS. Did not get hit by customs.

Ask if they will ship using Royal Mail. USPS will deliver your package here and you won't have to worry about customs. Courier services are where you'll run into trouble.

This is not entirely accurate. DHL still delivers to addresses in the US, but only for international parcels. What DHL discontinued last year was US domestic shipments-- i.e. shipments between two addresses entirely within the US. I've done countless shipments using all carriers and only been hit by customs once. In that single case it was FedEx, shipment was from the UK, and the value declared on the customs slip was around $2000.

US Customs, for the most part, doesn't give a fuck, regardless of carrier.

I've had guitars (~$1000), electronics and clothes shipped in from Asia and Europe, via most carriers, and never gotten hit with customs.

It's a bigger deal in nations that assess VATs.

Fedex rapes me with customs every time.

I think this whole issue really only has to do with the country you live in. I'm in Canada and if you receive anything that was shipped using UPS, DHL or Fedex, you will most likely get hit. If it's shipped USPS, the chances of getting hit are a lot lower.

As a seller, I've had people from the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy and Spain ask me to lower the value, so I assume those places are like Canada as far as getting taxed on items over $50-$100. I think the US and Australia have really high limits ($1000?).

Basically, check with your local border/custom agent.

Never ordered from Oki-ni, but I ordered something from flannels in Uk and got hit with a $45 customs fee

I placed an order with Our Legacy last year and had to fax all sorts of info to Fed Ex before getting a customs bill equal to almost half the value of the product I purchased. I have an order coming from Canada and one from UK at the moment and am dreading another incident like this.

Ordered some stuff from Europe totalling $940, and got hit with a $174 bill. Could have been better, but could have been worse.

Both were sent with Fedex International Priority.

Only my most recent order had any problems with customs. They asked me to provide ridiculous information on the manufacturer, composition and how they were made, and also required me to e-mail them the top portion of a 1040 form without concealing my SSN. I ultimately had the package bounced back. So much trouble for two pairs of gloves.

Less than a month ago, shipped to San Francisco, no customs fee.
