Strangers adding me on facebook... is someone spying on me?

It seems every few months I get a total stranger adding me on facebook, and I always add them to see who they are, then proceed to block them when I realize I have no connection to them. Today someone tried to add me, and looking at their profile I started to get a little nervous that this is setup by someone trying to gather intelligence on me. She was an attractive girl with a half-indian and half-latino name that I can't decipher, her pic looks like a stock pic from a catalog, she has practically no activity and 5 other friends. Her info is so inconsistent, it doesn't make sense. Somehow she graduated with me in high school in 2002, but she graduated from a US university in 2000, and was somehow amazingly born in 1991 and is now working in my line of business. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but it really seems like someone is trying to keep tabs on me via facebook. Surely government intelligence agencies around the world must be using this.

Happens to everyone. It's people trying to gather info on you so they can try and put 2 & 2 together and steal your identity. They get your birthday, or your mother's maiden name, or other stuff from facebook, and then try and figure out where else you go on the internet (like your bank) and try and break in. Most people use similar usernames for everything, surprisingly simple passwords, etc., so this tactic has a fairly high success rate.

Well, you really did it now. Once the agencies find out you are on to them, they have no choice but to "alleviate" any problems. . .

Usually it's someone who wants to promote something of theirs. I go to school with a guy who mass adds people so he can suggest his group page for them to become "fans" of.

I can believe that, but how would they have figured out what school I went to and what profession I'm in? We don't have any mutual friends, so they couldn't have seen my profile that way, and if I google myself I won't find squat.

this one makes me more nervous than your average clown trying to sell something because I don't believe it's even a real person.

if you don't know 'em, don't add 'em. Simple.

+1... listen, idiot, you might be a friend/relative/acquaintance of mine but in no way would I want to proclaim that I'm a fan of your company, your product, your wife's home baking business, your friend's kid clothes store or your favorite politician.

This has happened to me. I normally just message them asking where I know them from. If no response, then ignore the request. Also, never be afraid to "unfriend" people who add nothing to your fb experience. I still don't get how people accumalate 600-1200 "friends".

Once you message someone, they can see your profile temporarily. Trust me, I use this to my advantage sometimes, lol.

I don't know the exact circumstances, but a mature (60 or so), trusted friend recently had her account either hijacked, or someone created a fake clone, and used to send very destructive messages to co-workers (at a university). The result was that my friend had to shut down her account. Again, I don't know much beyond that, but scary none the less.
