NYC Dinner and Lounge for Celebration Suggestions

Hey all,

I'm a born and raised new yorker, but I feel like I am always missing some good gems in the city (just so happens you always tend to frequent the same places, ya know?). Anyway, a female friend of mine from out of town is going to be in the city, she is being sworn in as an Attorney, and I wanted to take her out to celebrate.

Here's some ideas of what I'm looking for:

- Romantic settings
- good wine/drink lists
- place where we could stay for a while w/o being rushed

Heres the thing, I'd love to go to dinner and then be able to stay in the same place, OR venture, but not too far, to a maybe low-key and quaint type lounge/bar to finish off the night with a few celebratory drinks, maybe some champagne.

This would be for Thursday or Friday night (or both, so let the suggestions fly). We are not picky at all with food, and at least one of the two nights I'd like the dinner to be something a bit more upscale (read: wearing a suit/sport coat would be ideal).

I've been told that Park Avenue Winter is a really nice spot, though I havent been. We are both fans of nice winebars (and I'd suggest Sofia Wine Bar on E50th btw if you all like quiet little spots that are pretty casual).

I am really open to anything, but most of all I'd like a place where we can hang out and relax for a while w/o hassle. Doesnt necessarily need to be at the same place we have dinner, but if it is that is a plus too.

I have a few places in mind, but I'm sure there are tons out there that I do not know of. Looking forward to some suggestions!!!

Thanks all,
Carmine

There are a whole bunch of restaurants that have annex type bars that you could adjourn to after. This may not fit all your criteria but some examples would be: - Peasant / Peasant Wine bar - Casa Mono / Bar Jamon - Hearth / Terrior I personally think the Brandy Library in Tribecca is a good spot for a romantic celebratory drink. You could go to a restaurant in the neighborhood like the Harrison or Bouley (if you wanted something very fancy). I also think the west village is a great spot for what you are looking for. You could go somewhere like little owl, wallse, perry street, August etc and then go to a bar in the area like lela bar, the upholstery store, the room. you could try the east village. End up at Bar Veloce, start somewhere like Jewel Bako or Pylos. Possibilities are endless.....

Thanks for the great suggestions. I totally forgot about the Brandy Library on N.Moore - that may be a great idea, or even maybe the Bubble Lounge.

I've been wanting to try Peasant actually, sounds like that may be a front runner!

Keep em coming!!!

F.Illi Ponte

it's cheesy, but that's kind of the point. definitely romantic and celebratory. and kind of, well, lawyer-like (it's the mafia thing). there's a decent bar, although you might want to go someplace else in tribeca (like Dylan Prime) for after-dinner drinks

HAHA! Your description of F.Illi Ponte is awesome, and on point. I've been there and I think that pretty much sums it up. As for TriBeCa, I like the idea of The Brandy Library, I'm thinking a steakhouse before hand - mainly cuz she said she'd like to go to one since I'm always going haha. Though I've been to both, which do you guys think is a better ambiance place for this situation: Dylan Prime or Wolfgangs. I personally like Wolfgangs much better, but I think the ambiance in Dylan Prime may win. Anyway, these are just some thought's I've been floating through my mind. If i was going to stay a little more on the east side, and even maybe further north, I was thinking of the Carlyle Cafe, but I've never been and sometimes those places with small tasting type-menus worry me. Any thoughts on this place? Or anything in the Midtown East/Upper East Side area that jump out at anyone?

I love Otto on 5th Avenue and 8th street. It's great, fun, and inexpensive. TIP: On a good date change venues at least once. It will make the night seem longer and better. When you remember it later you could say remember when we went here and there etc.

I took axelman's suggestion and went to the Brandy Library after my very casual wedding a few weeks ago. It was a great place to get some great drinks and appetizers. we also went to convivio- I dont know if its exactly what you are looking for, but the food was excellent.

she was actually sworn-in in albany so then we drove back down into NYC (she's from out of state).
but, thanks for the suggestions!

We kept things a bit more low-key this time around. We had dinner one night at Vice Versa on 51st b/w 8th and 9th. And then the next night we found ourselves in the mood for Thai food and decided to try Room Service on 9th Ave after a few good reviews. It was as expected when it comes to Thai. Good prices, really nice staff, fun decor, big menu, and the food was very good.

We also tried Clo in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. We tried this mainly because we had read so much about it in the past with its "cool" "interactive" tables and stuff. It was not a bad place to grab a quick glass of wine, but its definitely not worthy of the title "wine bar" -- and while I'd go again if I was maybe shopping in the TWC, I'd probably not make it a point to get there again anytime soon. but, we had been wanting to try it out, so we marked it off our list once and for all.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!!
