How hard is it to fly commercial and not be a backseat pilot? From my limited experience in flight training I have a great appreciation when pilots make good landings in rough conditions.

To switch from Commercial to Gulfstreams takes about a month. You basically only need a Type Rating, which teaches you how to handle that specific aircraft, otherwise your Com licence will cover everything. It can cost up to £20,000 to get a type rating though, so its not exactly cheap. Most of the pilots I know these days prefer them though. Rich businessman buys himself a jet, pays you top money to fly with him, stay in 5 Star hotels and generally live his luxury lifestyle while being paid to do a job you'd probably do for free! In terms of backseat flying I don't really know. I never made it to Commercial level, I had to drop out for personal reasons, but I just get a warm feeling knowing that if push came to shove, I could handle myself and the aircraft in just as good a manner as the pilot.

Unfortunately I don't know of any airline that allows this. However, I have a credit card that allows me to get miles on my airline that I can exchange for a discount on my staff travel rate. Works very well, actually.

Nothing. The "big bag" is a sort of phallic device used to entice and then "mile high" gay stweards (uh, I mean, all stewards).

All right. SOME not all pilots carry bologna and miracle whip on wonder bread sandwiches in glad bags... but those are the straight pilots who drink heavily and miss their targets by 150 miiles....the airline industry is not proud of its straight pilots.

So what is the archetypal pilot case anyways? The "big" part in the OP's title obfuscates me.

Ever see the Columbo episode starring Johnny Cash? He hid an airforce parachute in his case and then poisoned his wife while in the air and bailed out. Because it was a military chute and small he ended up breaking his leg and thus getting caught.

I forgot to mention that the only reason they are so big is because its nice to have something to sit on. My next one is made by La-z-boy!
