FAA mandated manuals. Maps on approaches to airports, etc.

You don't want to carry your bong on board in a plastic grocery bag, do you?

I have the following in mine-

-laptop
-FAA aero charts, NOTAMS, approach patterns, airspace enroute, etc
-spare calculator
-ATC headset
-a book or two
-"magazines"
-usually throw some candy in there too

I have a full-size case but I actually never use it, I find that my smaller one does the job just fine.

Doesn't mean I can't be a certified pilot, does it?

Condoms
K-Y Jelly
marital aid
Appreciation mags
Vibrator
Morning-after pills
Handcuffs

Pretty much the bare essentials a pilot needs for the lifestyle.

This is true. Full service, as they say in some businesses.

+1.

For me at least my Headset takes up most of the room, its about 25% of the size of my case.

I also keep my laptop with me for when I'm hanging around in dull pilots lounges.

Well in small airfields for BizJets or Light Aircraft they are usually just porta-cabins with nylon covered chairs and coffee machines.

In Commercial Airports they can be anything from the rooms with chairs to similar to the First Class lounges, with with NOTAMS and TAF/METARs all over the walls.

The larger ones are almost always nicer, simply because when you're paying someone $100,000 a year to fly your jumbo jet at just under the speed of sound, you want them to be at least a little bit relaxed and comfortable!

During a weather delay this past week ... I started a conversation with a flight attendant (looked like JetBlast's avatar!) only to discover that she is a pliot on furlough.
