How to title a car with an abandoned title?

I have the ability to pick up a stellar deal on a car...

But (there's always a but)...

the car has an abandoned title. well, it has no title to be exact. It was at an impound lot since the owner couldn't pay for it and the bank repo-ed it.
However, the lien is paid off now, and there's no title anywhere to be found.
Can it be retitled in MD? How would I do it?
I would get a signed bill of sale saying I paid like $500 or something like that. Is it doable? expensive? hard?
any insight would be appreciated!

Every state probably has its own rules. Contact the state office where you want to title and register the car.

Strange. I would think the bank would have already requested a replacement title for resale. But if you buy with the understanding that the bank doesn't have the title, be sure to get a signed, detailed bill of sale. What's the age of the car? If the vehicle is still in the DMV system, then you can just fill out the paperwork for a replacement title. If it's out of the system, then you may have to get a replacement title using a service such as this: http://www.its-titles.com/ I've used this service for motorcycles--one that came from overseas--and never had a problem. Caveat: I live in CA. Rules may be different in your state as forsbergacct2000\t mentioned. In CA, you can download all the appropriate forms--including Bill of Sale--from DMV's website. Check your state's site.

There is probably a way to get a new title reissued, but depending on your state it could take quite some time. Contact your local DMV office for more information. You'll probably also have to pay some fees.

DO NOT purchase the car until title is established. If the car comes back as stolen you will lose it. Work with the seller to get good title, then make payment. And don't drive without registration and insurance or you're asking to be in an accident.
