Ricoh GRD III

Anyone have one? Or played with it?

What do you think? I want to replace my Nikon G9.

Don't have one myself, but curious why you're looking at it rather than one of the micro 4/3 offerings?

If something that is small and compact is what you're looking for, I'd say S90 > GRDIII. GRD III has less distortion but for the extra $$$ not worth it in my opinion.

I wrote a little thing on GRD III vs S90 on my blog: http://which43.com/

I prefer the S90, but only just. The GRD III is an excellent camera as well and if you are nuts about image quality, the GRD III lens is superior, especially for corner sharpness.

yo yfyf, what about gf1 vs gh1. i think now that prices are lower gf1 is looking pretty competitive to the ricoh grdIII

GF1 vs GH1? I don't have much experience with the GH1, only handled it briefly but it has a nice built-in EVF. The GF1's external EVF is poo. Image quality between the two should be very similar. Is the VF a dealbreaker for you? GF1 is a pretty nice camera to travel with, I have no qualms keeping hanging a camera around my neck all the time though. For Japanese tourst points.

Have GF1 prices dropped? I want one badly, but just looked a week or so ago and they were still tough to find and remained at $899 when available (with 20mm pancake).

GF1 prices haven't dropped for the 20mm lens, but they have dropped for the zoom lens to $856. To be honest, I wouldn't pass up the 20mm lens, it's just way too good to miss regardless of price. If you're on the fence, the Olympus E-PL1 looks interesting (and cheaper). It should be available about March 5th and onwards.

yfyf, you're 4/3 blog is great, I want to see more.

I guess it comes down to the S90 vs GF1 vs G11.

I'm going to play with all them next week, I think I may end up getting a GF1 AND an S90.

Agreed; I have no interest in purchasing it with the zoom. The added size defeats the purpose of the camera for me, which is to have something that I can easily carry around daily that is capable of producing excellent images, even in low light.

I'd think of it as adding an expensive fast prime to my collection that has the benefit of coming in a very portable package.

Were the E-PL1 offered with this lens I'd give it serious consideration, but the lens offerings are keeping me away from Olympus.
