Wanting to get into jazz

Thread Starter
After taking a trial listen in response to reading a recommendation of the Good Night and Good Luck soundtrack by Dianne Reeves in the "smoking music" thread, I realize that I really enjoy this type of jazz. What are some artists (modern or classic) that I should try out? I'm very much a fan of the 50's/60's nightclub feel if that makes sense.

Do you like Dizzy, Dizzy Gillespie? Between the ages of 10 and 15, I met him several times. That man is sitting on a hot coal in hell, I've known it for years now. He was a self-centered, money-grubbing piece of shit.

How does your opinion of him detract away from his music?

There was a great compilation called the "Mercury songbook" that was a number of disks of vocal based jazz that's really great. It's a wonderful collection of standards that you would have to find used but worth it.

Hateful name-dropping of dead jazz stars--hold a grudge much? Let it go. It's all over.

Glad you enjoyed my recommendation of GN & GL by Dianne Reeves! Also give Jimmy Smith a go.

The first thing that comes to mind is The Holly Cole Trio.
