Sore Traps When Running

Thread Starter
Over the last 6 months or so I have taken up running for the first time in my life. Things are going well and I have really improved. However, I consistently get really really sore in my right trapezious. It is a sort of burning/stabbing pain. It isn't dibilitating but it hurts to move my neck around too much.

It usually sets in after about 15-20 minutes of running and usually takes about 30-45 minutes after I am done running to go away. I have tried stretching and as far as I can tell I am not particularly tight on my right side when I run.

Does this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions on how to avoid it?

Stretch, apply heat and cold before and after.

This is common with women.

Relax your shoulders.

Agree with why. You are tensing way too much. Try relaxing. Are you swinging your arms when you run? Or are you running like an action figure?

Try 10 minutes of dynamic stretching. I'm assuming you're probably doing statics because that's what most people do, but statics are better for a cool down.

Slipped disc.

My guess is you have your shoulders shrugged or are holding your arms too high.

Try to drop your shoulders and keep your arms loose and lower.
