what about host advantage, and the fact that most 50-50 calls will go their way due to ref bias?

Do you realize they didn't manage to qualify for the second qualifying round of this year African Nations Cup!
They are beneath anything, they will need a lot of help from the refs to win a game.

fair point, but you cant ENTIRELY discount the psychological advantage that the host team gets i definitely expect SA to perform above par
post #125 of 4057
So who's going to be out in SA group? France, Uruguay or Mexico?
You have to choose two teams then.
i was thinking uruguay, but my parisian soccer-gambling friends are telling me to go for a draw between uru and france

As poorly as France has played, they're going to advance with Mexico out of the group stage. Too much talent on that team, even though they left some well deserving players home. Unfortunately, unless they place first in the group, they'll have to play Argentina in the next round.

Also, Drogba has NOT been ruled out of the WC. Very confusing situation it seems.

yeah i agree about france historically i think they've always underperformed when the hype surrounding the team was high, and vice versa - and this time there's no hype/expectation at all

W/ these late injuries I think there may be some brinksmanship/misinformation involved as well...

Yet another disgrace for France, they've just lost against China.

Very excited to see Gourcuff play--how does he rate among those on the board who have watched Bordeaux play much? (I imagine anyone who follows AC Milan will be underwhelmed...)

I hope France doesn't score one goal the entire tournament.

8 years too late for that.

I wanted to sneak out of work to see the first game. South Africa/Mexico is of no interest to me. But to be honest, it's getting hard to justify the delinquency with performances like this.

On the other hand, I hope Robben comes back in full health. Netherlands has been brilliant on offense.
