Why did his employees know he was looking for a new job? Sounds like he fucked himself on that one.

Agreed. It's one thing to tell a colleague you're looking (though there can be dire consequences to that, too); it's another to tell someone under you you're looking. That makes the whole place look bad.

Doesn't make much of a difference whether it's hearsay if it's an at-will state.

I also agree. In fact I believe some things should be kept to yourself where you work, and in my view, being on the market is one of them. It's one thing to be caugt looking, but when you essentially announce to the world you're looking, if you don't find anything then I think you look worse if you end up with nothing.

Yeah, sounds odd that he would be fired on hearsay from an employee on their exit interview who probably just wanted to screw him over.

It's an office, not a court of law, that's just how offices work. Typically when stuff like that happens, HR already has their reservations about the guy before hand, but a comment like that just confirms everything they were concerned about.
