hey gents-gotta a really bad cold which has kept me on the couch all day yesterday and today. Popped Nyquil gel caps before bed and took some Vicks44 for a heavy cough that is coming on.

Anyone have any meds they would recommend? particularly something for the cough.

thanks.

Robitussin or any generic containing dextromethorphan should help with the cough. For lots of chest congestion look for something also containing guaifenesin which is an expectorant. Drink lots of fluids at the same time. If the cough is really, really bad a doctor can prescribe something cotaining codeine.

I've had great luck avoiding the flu by taking vitamin D3. Since I began taking the sunshine vitamin four years ago I haven't had a cold since. Don't know if it will help with a current cold but figure it could. I have not read many articles about D3 fighting infections but here are a couple I've recently seen about that idea: http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/20...swine-flu.html http://www.drbriffa.com/blog/2010/02...nfection-free/

A five day pack of Zithromax from the Doc helps to reduce the severity and duration of a cold for me.

This must be a placebo effect then cause your doctor is an ass.

Colds are caused by viruses while Zithromax (azithromycin) is an antibacterial (bacteriostatic) agent.

Maybe you had pneumonia instead.

I was a big fan of Zicam nasal spray, but a recent cold sent me to the drug store to find that this product had been recalled. Apparently, some people lost their sense of smell with Zicam. I bought some Zicam lozenges, which I felt weren't as effective. I'm looking for a substitute.

What if you took 2-500 mg vitamin c pills instead of the emergencee?

Whenever I get a cold I buy the following items;

- Tylenol sore throat syrup... it freezes your throat for a few hours. Makes even the worst sore throats quite tolerable.

- Dristan nasal decongestant

- Nyquil

- Bill Bee's beeswax lip balm. You tend to do a lot of mouth breathing with a cold when the dristan stops working. Your lips can really dry out and hurt, so I take care of it with this lip thing which I find particularly unoffensive version chapstick.

I read similar advice about Vitamin D and started taking supplements as well.

It sounds hocus pocus, but in addition to any meds from the doctor, I've found that raw ginger helps:

- get a large piece of fresh raw ginger - preferably organic (any root that grows in the ground probably is better if it's organic). wiki info here
- use the grater to grate the stuff into a large mug.
- add a large tablespoon or more of honey.
- take a lemon preferably organic. you can use them two ways: 1) use the grater to get the yellow rind (zest) but not the bitter pith. 2) Then cut off a quarter, half or squeeze the juice into your mug.
- top up with hot water; let it steep for a minute or two and drink.
- drink as often as you need; if you can take it - eat the remaining ginger with a small spoon.

or, do it spartan-style and break of a nice sized chunk of raw ginger (cleaned & peeled), pop in your mouth, chew & swallow.
