Saw Esperanza Spalding on Austin City Limits last night and loved it.
Anyone know of any other jazz bassist band leaders I should check out?

Definitely both of the above.

If you like jazz-fusion and funk too, you could check out Marcus Miller, and early Level 42/Mark King (1980-82) is pretty good.
