We have no disagreement here. What I said -- in response to your comment that we need both celebrations and gifts -- was that I prefer a gift of experience (a celebration, for example) to something tangible ... probably because I have too much of everything. This, however, is not to say a tangible gift would be seen as unimportant.
Were it important for a friend to give me a tangible gift ... I would be very gracious and grateful in my receipt of it ... it would indeed be important to me ... because the friend is important to me.

Yes, and no. It may make one happy to give -- it certainly makes me happy to give -- but it is NOT the purpose of a gift in my opinion. A gift is meant to honor the recipient. In giving ... the giver's happiness is a side benefit.
