60th Birthday Party Ideas?

It's time to plan for a significant birthday.

To help with ideas ... some previous celebrations have included a tour of a private sculpture garden followed by a picnic on the lawn ... a sleepover at the Monterey Bay Aquarium ... a weekend at a B&B ... at week with friends in an out-of-the-way location ... a winery tour and brunch ... a catered dinner on the beach.

At this point I'm not certain if this occasion will be an extended event (an all-week or weekend type of vacation/get-away) that might involve travel and a smaller group of good friends & family ... or be a mid-day/evening social gathering held locally (within 100+/- miles of New York or San Francisco) and intended for a larger circle of friends.

Ideas may be general or specific. Your input is solicited.

I thought this thread was about Rube

Catered dinner on the beach sounds like an excellent idea, but after some other afternoon / daytime event.

How about a relaxing day at a spa/barbershop? Lots of old-school barbershops that cater to groups and will leave you fresh and relaxed...

Do something that sounds like fun, not something that sounds impressive.

Can't he do both?

Fishing trip to the Caribbean. At least that's what I'd do.

Sorry Jon. Do something because it sounds like fun, not because it sounds impressive.

Good thought. Have you recommendations?

So far camping at Big Sur has my attention.

As for fun vs. impressive ... fun would be the intent. Everything on my list above was done because we were certain that the guests would enjoy themselves. Besides ... when it comes to the likely candidates for the small group (ages 55-70) ... nothing "impressive" will impress any of them. The larger group ... well, we might have to show some restraint.

I guess you have to know your group. Personally, I wouldn't go camping if forced, no matter how elegant the accommodations, and probably wouldn't want to spend more than a couple days with a large group of people. If money is no object, and Big Sur sounds good, rent out the Post Ranch Inn for a couple of nights, or even better, rent out a ten or so bedroom villa in Italy or France for a week. That way, at least, you retain some of the privacy and creature comforts of regular life. I would need that, myself. I don't like big events, and am always the first one to go home, so I would never do that for my own birthday. I remember my father's 60th fondly, and think the rest of the guests do as well. It was bigger than I would like, probably 65 people, and they just held a lovely dinner party, with no holds barred food, in the foyer of their home with entertainment outside. Again, I would rather perish than have that many people somewhere to celebrate me, but he liked it. Edit: For example, we rented this for a couple of weeks some years ago. It is smaller than I mentioned, but fantastic: http://hostedvillas.com/index.php?op...id=7&Itemid=30 If you want to go all out: http://hostedvillas.com/index.php?op...d=52&Itemid=30 Maybe something like this: http://hostedvillas.com/index.php?op...d=39&Itemid=30 In my experience, their places come staffed with excellent help, and very good cooks.

If it's a large group ... the fact that it's a birthday event is unlikely to be shared. It will be my thank you to people I like.

If it's a small group ... it will include only people who are friends in common (everyone already knows and likes everyone else). They will certainly be people who know how to give others space. Moreover there will be no RSS as guest of honor either.

Instead of going camping, how about going campy?

With the stereo blasting Diana Ross, make your entrance in a campy sequin gown -- red preferably -- dancing and lip-syncing to "I'm coming out! I want the world to know! got to let it show!"

And if you remember to turn your back to your guests and wiggle your butt, even the most jaded will be impressed.

Sounds like something the Baron Alexis de Rede would do.

Both good ideas ... but might leave the women feeling less than thrilled ... or completely left out.

I'm looking for that "other" afternoon event.

Very interesting idea! I'm likely to use this for another occasion.

Again ... don't want to exclude the women. Good idea though.

The small group would have already seen this ... too many times.

Are we personally acquainted? You seem to know me very well. Once in Munich, a fellow in leather walked up to me and anounced, "You have a hot ass and you know it."

I thanked him but passed on his request for further inspection.
