True Chablis is, by law, made from Chardonnay grapes. And it is almost never avialable for $15. That said, there are Chablis out there that can change your life but they don't come cheap. That's another thread.

Really though what people are sleeping on is the often superior to cognac California brandy. Instead of using subpar grapes to begin with, a lot of CA distillers use quality wine grapes. Germain-Robin makes some of the best stuff on the planet, and it's a relative bargain.
