this doesn't make sense. if you buy it with a contract, you pay it back in 2 years through the contract. but a contract is just an agreement to pay a service fee, you can't use the phone without a service plan. so if you buy it off contract, you just pay it up front. so fine, after 3 years without a contract + full price device. the final sum is the same in the end when the phone falls apart due to planned obsolescence (say, battery gets fudged) in 2-3 years...

If you want to keep your grandfathered unlimited data plan on AT&T, you have to buy any new device outright. Shit out of luck for VZW censored.gif

But the phone bill is the same regardless of whether you're contracted in or not, no?  So it's cheaper, if you plan to use the phone in one place for two years, to sign a contract...

yeah basically, but if you check the iphone thread you see the opposite -- people wanting to buy the phone off contract to not be tied down by extortionist contracts that make you repay cost of phone ...

that's why BB1's post was off, it's more affordable to buy it on contract and you don't have to be able to drop $retarded in one fell swoop

I've never had to do this for any new phone with AT&T, just renew my contract, buy a new phone (subsidized price), and keep my unlimited data.

its not thats why doesnt make sense to talk about hidden cost of subsidizing phone by trapping people into contracts, the phone is useless without a service plan that you have to pay for in either case ...

do you and homeboy imessage each other now lol how was nyc meetup ??

there is nothing bad about a contract, people act like it's the end of the world...the only benefit is switching phones but for most people they can handle having an iphone for another year skipping one product cycle

only meetup was with gdl, really nice du and he ate all my caramelized onion, bacon, egg pizza after he said that he had already eaten beforehand

Probably because you weren't on 4G.

It seems like plans are improving, though, at least with Verizon. I had an iPhone with unlimited minutes, 200 texts, and 2GB data for ~$120/mo, and I just switched to unlimited voice and texts, 4GB shared data, with an iPhone and iPad for the same price.

I have 900 minutes (of which I hardly use), unlimited night and weekend (looks like they capped it now on new plans) 6000 rollover minutes stocked up lol, unlimited texting (which is a rip), 2gb data for like 84 a month with corporate discount (should be 105).

SMS should be free, then again we don't even have true 4G so whatever. Don't even get me started on internet providers.

Phone/internet carriers in the US have way too much lobbying power.
