A Modest Proposal to Fix SF Site Slowness

I have had Uverse high speed service for a few months now and Style Forum is the only slow site I deal with. So in the interest of constructive criticism, why don't we consider the following actions: 1. Ask SF members for $10 donations via paypal if money is required to move to a host with more speed/bandwidth. 2. Reduce the number of pages of large photo-based threads such as Shoe Pron and the Are These Fake Thread by closing the original threads, archiving them, and starting a Part II Thread. One board I visit limits the thread page numbers to 50 and then creates Part X. My understanding is that this improves vbulletin speed. 3. Upgrade vBulletin to the latest and greatest version. Are these reasonable? Just trying to see what we can do. I don't want to have j, Brad, or Fok or others have too great a burden in running the site. I'm willing to make a donation if it helps j.

Firefox timed out on me as I was waiting for this topic to load. I blame you for this, AF.

(ETA - I'm in as well)

I thought you were going to tell j to lower taxes to promote growth.

The site has been pretty good for me lately.

Perhaps ironically, this is clearly a case where taxes are too low, and growth has gotten out of control as a result. If it cost, say, a dime to start a thread or $10 to join SF, there would be be fewer new threads/members to gum up the works.

In all seriousness, I'd be willing to throw in a bit of cash as well.

Glad to see others on board. I think a voluntary donation effort could go a long way. It's a good site and I want to make sure it has the resources it needs.

I'm willing to spend a buck or 2. Perhaps combine it with a name change...

If you guys weren't always logged on and posting 24/7 then it wouldn't be a problem.

- A one time donation would probably not cover the ongoing monthly costs of more server power.

I have a feeling/theory that many parts of the internet (content) are going to move towards a small cost/fee for use. Nominal cost, though. Since "free" opens any website up for abuse (easy example: free bumps by selfish sellers) some cost needs to be installed to curb abuse. The gain for the individual committing the selfish act outweighs his cost (which is none at the moment), so all the individuals commit selfish acts. The sum of which is a big problem.

So to curb the abuse/overuse of a scares commodity (in this case bandwidth or page slots) some type of control needs to be installed. Either pay ($) or maximum number of posts, etc.. A tiered user subscription could easily accommodate heavy/light users. The fee does not need to be high. It's been shown that the difference of free vs. $1.00 is a large one in terms of impact.
