Thoughts/Information on home design

Svenn's post has motivated me to post my own idea for a dream home/cottage.

I'm completely new to home buying/building, and I'm hoping you can help me narrow down my search a little bit.

A good friend of mine is a custom home designer, and I'll be bringing your advice to him.

As far as I know, this is a traditional English cottage. I've got a lot of land just outside my city, with a fairly long driveway, and is awaiting building.

There has always been an attraction for me to "Ye Ole English" designs, and homes are no different. I find there is something extremely secure, and comfortable about this design.

Feedback/information (pertaining to what you would call this... I can't find much on my local MLS, etc.) would be much appreciated!

Look to the future!

Hire an architect and let them have a stab at it. Are you in the english countryside? Is it currently 1900? Then why do you want to design a new "traditional" english cottage? Nothing wrong with buying a beautiful old building or designing something to match what is already on the property but if you are starting from scratch...why not let the design start from scratch too?

I would really want something bigger. Thats a beautiful house though. I love classic designs myself. Would like to have a tudor mansion in a few years(fingers crossed).

Really I would be happy with any style house as long as it's in the country and I have my garage full of cars and a man cave.

Glad to have gotten you thinking about this... hopefully with enough 'google image' searching and browsing about house design books at the bookstore, you'll find what you're looking for. It takes time though to finally find your 'ideal' home... I've been going at it for at least 10 years now, thinking about every last detail, interior and exterior, of the house i'd like someday. Other people's advice might not help much because it's so subjective.

If you build a house out of stone, get a good shake roof, and REAL wood windows, it'd be pretty hard for it to look bad. Usually one of those three components are always missing in the Mcmansions of today.
