Anyways, decent buy or did I get shafted as an SF nub? I was looking for some APC New Standards, but there weren't any at the store I went to and I'm reluctant to buy anything "slim" without trying it on for fear of not fitting into them..

Even at $115, Diesels aren't a great value, but if they fit well and you like them though, do what you do. I'd still encourage you to try to find some NS, or maybe not since it's been a gateway to selvedge denim for me...there's something totally cool about a pair of jeans forming to your body and having the fades/fit be completely personal.

Dude, it's plaid...it's uniform and ubiquitous by design.

Taking some old beater jeans and cutting them to shorts.
Where would you guys make the cut for jean shorts? Right above combs? Before the knees?

Also would you guys cut jeans if they're selvedge? Just ignore the aesthetics and cut straight through?

It's quite hard to make it look awesome or kinda cool (there is only awesome, kinda cool, and horrible, no other inbetweens) but it is possible.
1st. They should be blue, otherwise it always looks like s**t (If you do have black ones, as I do, I plan to bleach them, a lot, but I'm not sure if that will make things worse or better ^^)
2nd. Cut them right at your knee or 2-3 cm below, and then you can roll'em up until you get a nice length

(what you settle on should be above the knee, never ever wear shorts that are covering the knee or even further down)

It's very true that most often it looks fugly, but it CAN be done real nice.
Couldn't find any matching images but a friend has a kickass pair of lightblue distressed jeansshorts, and I myself plan to take an old black pair of Cheap Mondays and bleach them into light gray, and then turn them into shorts ^^

I'm definitely going to check out some NS either when I get back to the states in August, or in the UK if I find them in store.

How should I wash a red cotton shirt without red dye bleeding onto my other clothing?

Wash it by itself. Eventually though it should stop bleeding...

get the Baxter of California. smells great and and goes on clear.
i read that the malin-goetz is gel form. i don't like gel personally
aesop smells good but the spray capsule is gimmicky. mine broke after < 1 month of use and i still have > 75% bottle of it left. it also depends on your body and whether the deodorant mixes well.

...it might make sense to shower after biking to work if you sweat significantly...
