I usually wear 559 and 505 Levis in a 30/30.

1. Should I invest in designer jeans for dressier occasions? Do people notice? Is it worth it?

2. If so, where should I start my search?

btw, if i'm totally offbase with my budget, please let me know. ideally, that's what i would like to spend atm on a new watch, but if there is really not too much out there in that range and i need bump it up please let me know what the minimum budget i should be thinking about for a quality piece.

You're budget is fine. I'd go to amazon where they have a lot of gray market Seikos and lot of offering from Bulova.

I got a fleece-lined hoodie at Eddie Bauer that's been absolutely bullet proof. Maybe the best $70 I've spent this season.

Can anyone tell me what kind of jacket Eminem is wearing in this video?  I'm looking for something like that, just a simple leather(?) hoodie/sweatshirt thing...

His freestyle starts at 6:36 and you get a good view of it...but anyone that's into rap at all should watch the whole thing, the verses are INSANEEEEE

So I'm studying in Paris for the semester. Usually I feel pretty comfortable with how I am dressed at school, but men here take their game to an entirely different level. While I want to achieve that relative level of presentability as a man, in public, it's also pretty damn clear that clothing is waaay more expensive here. Typically, in the States, I'd save and buy nicer things, but things really do just cost a butt-ton here.

I guess my question is this: is it worth the effort to look for cheap-o shit in places like Zara and H&M while I'm here? Or am I just going to be investing in something that will fall apart after too many sweaty nights in bars/clubs?

Or, even better, if anyone can suggest retailers in Paris with reasonable prices for a college student who enjoys eating 3 meals a day, then I'm all ears.

(And yeah, I know: you buy cheaper things, you get cheaper things. There's nothing wrong with cheap things – and there's nothing wrong with saying, "hey, just deal with the fact that nice things are expensive" – but I guess I'm just much more hesitant, and far more unsure about how I should go about dressing myself, here, where the level of acceptable attire in public is far higher than what I've been accustomed to.)

Thanks fellas.

Is this jacket too long?

467

The length is fine. But to my eyes the shoulders look a bit big. If you have a larger head though it should be ok. Helps keep things in proportion.

I think you just need to stick to basics (like most of us do/should, most of the time): a well-fitting shirt in a basic colour; dark denim; a nice pair of walnut brogues; a well-fitting jumper ('sweater'); a fetching scarf; a duffel coat. That kind of outfit would look good anywhere, and none of it should be hugely expensive. You're a student, it's not like you need to wear a suit or tie (two of the more expensive items in the sartorial world).

Really, the question here is not 'what do I wear in Paris', it's 'how do I dress well without spending an ass-ton of money?' And that's a question many of us on SF are trying to answer, wherever we live.

Best of luck and enjoy it. Have you seen a baguette vending machine yet??

Thanks for the advice man.

Though I'm well covered in the dark denim area, I always feel unsure about buying shirts. I guess just grabbing the best-fitting oxfords ought to be the first thing I do—but I never know how to make a jeans+OCBD look at least somewhat interesting. One user had an awesome post in the WAYWT thread a while back (I think it was willy?) that made the jeans+OCBD look really, really good. I guess I just want to figure out how to elevate the basics. Which is probably what everyone is probably always trying to do, but eh...

Anyway, thanks agin for the advice—I've been loving Paris so far and I hope that, in addition to building on my language skills, I get a better sense of fashion out of it too!

Oh, and I have not seen a baguette vending machine. Please tell me that they are actually real. I'm doubting these things are real. (Bread in a vending machine? Wha?)

I have a hooded jacket with a drawstring in the hood that I've pulled too far, so it's only in by maybe two thirds, and I can't get it back out again. Help!

Edit: No worries, I'm McGyver.
