Hey guys!

Can you guys please recommend me some winter boots for Boston?

I'm an exchange student from Australia heading to Boston from January - June, and Sydney's winter is no where as cold (don't even snow) as Boston so I have no clue what kind of boots I'll need. Just looking for something that doesn't look ridiculous (like LL Bean - sorry supporters) and enable me to walk around comfortably as I'll be visiting places.

Any other tips to prepare me would be welcomed!

Thanks in advance!

I'm trying to date this Levi's Type III Trucker Jacket in Bedford Corduroy, black and gold big E tag, single stitch left of bottom button hole, red and white tag in collar. My best guess is pre-'71 although. Saw one on a Japanese site but no date info. Any info appreciated.

No ideas?

@Stevey, need your price range. How long term are you looking to keep them? Prefer to buy them in Australia or Boston?

Max of around $300. Looking for a long term good pair of shoes that I can wear in Boston during winter & back in Australia. Definitely in the US cause it's much cheaper. Everything are too damn expensive down here.

Depends on whether the denim is treated for shrinkage (sanforized.)

Sanforized denim sees minimal shrinkage - unsanforized denim shrinks - think Levis 501 STF.

Denim also stretches when it is worn.

Example: My 'true' waist is a 34". I purchased 32" sanforized Gustin denim. It stretched to accomodate my waist but I expect minimal shrinkage when they are eventually washed.

The Gustins are probably more of a 33.5" now which is perfect. This is after about three weeks of wear. Sure, they were slightly tight at first, but in my opinion that's better than having the waist stretch and be too large.

So - the short answer is it depends on what you are thinking about buying.

I don't have any recommendations for specifically winter boots. I'd just get regular boots and sole them with something non-slip. Things like Red Wing Iron Ranges or Wolverine 1000 mile can be had for under $300 regularly (the latter you can get really cheap "seconds" from Sierra Trading Post).

I'm in Providence RI, and I bought these 3 years ago, these are very comfortable, great for winter, and are very good for the price.

Also, I'd check out Redwing. A little more expensive but great boot overall, and within your price range.
