It's sad to think of the opportunities missed when new members decide not to continue participation because they decided that their time is just not worth the negativity they initially encountered.

There shouldn't be a requirement of thick skin to be able to participate in a site called Styleforum, and just because a new member does not have such attributes doesn't mean they can bring something meaningful to our lives.

Well, for what it's worth, I joined SF just because it seemed to be more fun than... uh.. the alternatives. A healthy dose of snark, insider jokes, and cliquishness, in addition to all things sartorial.
Always seemed more interesting, and people seemed to be having more fun. So while it can scare people off, it can also attract others.

I don't really see the point of a lot that goes on in CE, so I stay out of it. That doesn't mean I want it closed down. I don't care about SW&D, so I don't go there. You don't like DT, don't read it. Heck, you can even exclude it from 'new posts', that's how easy it is.
I have the feeling that DT threads outside of DT won't be happening as much in the future, with the two major culprits in timeout. And it's not like MC is otherwise full of high-class threads either, you usually have to look hard to find the wheat among the 'what should I wear to a job interview', 'what shirt is Brad Pitt wearing', or 'give me excuses to keep this suit' chaff.

^This. If it weren't for Dumb Threads, I'd have stopped checking the site out long ago. I find CE's desire for constant "**** YOU!" discourse rather inane, and the same for those that even after years of posting still post images of what they wear for the critique/approval of their peers, but I know that others would think the same of parody threaks and "I Don't Want to Bang Most Chicks."

Depends on who you actually try to have discussion with in CE. Ignore certain people and life in CE is actually informative and somewhat challenging.

I don't know that the regular WAYWRN posters aer hoping for everyone's approval. I know some of them just like their clothes and also enjoy some conversation on styles/combinations they may have otherwise avoided.

The difference with DT and the other forums is some of them actually require some kind of thinking. I don't hate DT, but no other forum I've ever run or visited has a DT section. They just ban people that are otherwise really stupid everywhere. To each their own.

When I stated those about MC/SW&D and CE, I was mainly using them as an example (with a small dose of occasional feelings). I don't post images or post much in CE myself, but that doesn't mean I see no value in those sections, I just don't personally feel the need to participate. I do check them out from time to time, and I have felt well informed.

Every social group (the bar analogy fits well here), SF included, needs to vent their dumber thoughts or sillier natures at times, even if it's only for certain users. Other forums may not have a dumb section, but that's part of SF's unique nature, which is what many find appealing. I'm also a member of SuperFuture and StyleZeitgeist, and while SZ doesn't really have a dumb section (because they're heavy-handed-mod srs-buzinez types), SuperFuture has a certain allowance for dumb **** in Supertrash. Perhaps it's more than coincidence that the dictator-mod atmosphere of SZ isn't as popular as SF and Sufu's. As you said though, to each their own. You are correct, and my only reason for responding was to elaborate on my earlier post, which may be oversimplified.

Anyway, I agree with Manton here, and also think MS adds no value to this forum. And for what it is worth, I don't like that crappy "you mentioned your daughter" defense of MS.

I hope Manton will continue to participate if he wishes, but very much understand if he doesn't, having personally cut back my involvement on this forum as well.

I don't think its as simple as that. MS's point, as I read it, was not that Manton's daughter was fair game because Manton mentioned his daughter, but she was fair game because Manton used her as a tool to insult MS. I think the latter point is reasonable.

Sorry, you're The Man too, Matt. Power corrupts. Look at what has happened to Kyle.

Speaking of which...does anyone else find it odd that only two mods claim to have seen TG? Power also attracts sycophants!

(I'm just kidding, TG...or am I?)

Yes I find it odd and it seems they are fighting over her. Here's a conspiracy theory for ya. I think it's a shared sock between matt and kwilk.
