. Is it the weak (or rising powers) challenging the hegemon?

He has a rather black-and-white view on issues, would be my guess. The 'if you're not with us I'll buy you a ticket to North Korea' thread is but one example. I don't think he deserves it, but the rationale behind trolling Manton can be understood. In that, Manton is somewhat like the country he is prone to defend, the US of A(!). I'm off to NK, now.

+1. I get why people troll Manton. He has very strong views that he doesn't apologize for. That doesn't mean that the trolling should be tolerated (it generally isn't), it just means that it makes sense that it happens.
But what do I know, I met the guy and found him very agreeable and nice, a great guy. I liked him a lot. So maybe I have just been brainwashed!

i dont know, most of the trolling that comes his way from the fnb boys I just don't get. They - by and large - were never really CE folk who had political issues with him, they seem to be guys from the MC/AAAC men's fashion board (long before there was an interchange), who just seem to hate the guy. I've honestly never understood it. He's always conducted himself extremely well there, is extremely knowledgable, extremely patient, and extremely generous with his sharing of his knowledge. I've never understood why he is such a **** magnet.

As has been pointed out here on SF (many, many times), I don't hesitate to talk **** to someone I disagree with and am more than comfortable with launching personal attacks and resorting to insults--to varying degrees of success. I don't talk **** to Manton. When someone mentioned that he and I would make great enemies, I respectfully declined. He is a lot smarter than me and much better versed in a wider range of topics. He also admits when he doesn't know something and won't go off on a tangent about it (the easiest way to lose an argument). JLibourel too. They are not worth my time, obviously not because I think I am above arguing with them but because I am fairly sure I would lose miserably. I guess I should exclude arguments that are opinion based and sailing or city-planning related.

Just wanted to weigh in and say that I really like Conne and MAnton, for different reasons (really, humour and knowledge respectively).

I hate to boost his ego any more that I have to, but I think Manton is not only a gentleman and knowledgeable but also has a dry sense of humour that is sometimes overlooked around here.

That sucks sometimes but it's true. He's one of those guys that you aren't sure whether you want to buy him a beer or crack one over his head.

Coldarchon and StephenHero are not similar IMHO. I found StephenHero to be intelligent and persuasive in formulating an argument - not dissimilar to why, in fact.
