I don't use it from the home page, I use it from the "subscriptions" link at the top of SF that takes you to:
http://www.styleforum.net/users/subscriptions/index/view/activity

the threads view works, but the activity view is much tighter and easier to look at...except you can't click on the "More" button.

Here is what happens:
1. Load the activity page (I have the option to auto-subscribe to every thread I post in enabled, so I have a LOT of subscribed threads).
2. Click more - the wheel will spin for a second and it will load 10 more threads (for a total of 20)
3. Click more again - the wheel will just spin and spin forever.
4. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it will *eventually* load more pages. In fact it did this just now while I was writing this post (I went back to the tab and there were now 30 threads showing...but this is a call that should take a few seconds, not several minutes).
Other times it will just time out (sometimes I even see a box saying it timed out).

My guess is it is related to server load to some extent. On most days, it never works for me....on some days it works fine. Right now it worked, but took several minutes. Its like the AJAX call gets lost and doesn't know what to do. A browser trying to load a page (like the link aravenel posted where it loads a completely new page when you hit next) will retry if a page fails to load...but it seems like the AJAX script that inserts new subscriptions doesn't have very robust failure modes.

The Auto-spoiler issue:

Just to add to the conversation, I tether SF from my phone to a laptop generally. I set to browse only 10 posts at a time because a million quoted pictures sucks up a lot of data and space. If they are condensed it would make browsing easier (and cheaper) because I could browse with more posts per page without worrying that 1000 pictures are going to be loading up at once. Just another experience.

You know what....it seems to be working moderately well for me right now today. Still slow, but its not failing completely like it does some days.

I timed it a bit.
Load up the subscriptions page (first 10 results).
Click on more and I get 10 more results in one second--basically instantaneously.
Click on more again and get 10 more results in 30 seconds.
Do it again and get 10 in 30 seconds
Do it again and get 10 in 30 seconds.
Wait a minute or two
click it again and get 10 in 30 seconds.

I'm timing it with an analog watch, but this really seems like it is taking 30 seconds every time.

I am guessing there is something wrong with the first request. The script probably waits 30 seconds, doesn't get a response and tries again. Either that or there is some sort of rate limit on the database queries (but then why was my last attempt, which was after a few minutes of no activity, also delayed).

Maybe on the days that it doesn't work at all, the server is just busy so the 30-second retry also fails. I'm doing this on Chrome in Win7, but I have experienced it on other OSes and browsers. When we first moved to the new-SF, it worked fine...it seems like it was a month or two later that it stopped working right.

Images should be cached...modern browsers will only download the same picture once and quoting a picture shouldn't be copying it and moving it to a new location.

The problem with the auto-spoiler is that different people see different numbers of posts on a page, depending on your settings, and there is the option of going directly to a specific post (last post on subscriptions, for example). If everyone had the same experience, this might be more feasible. In any case, engineering resources are stretched thin, and even if I agreed that this was an okay idea, it's not one for which I'd put my neck out.

what the general issue is, as i understand it, is that most people when they check into a thread that they read, they land on the last post they read in any given thread. when checking in during the day, it seems inevitable that two things happen.

1. someone that will quote 4 or 5 previous posts, sometimes separately without using multi-quote, and sometimes at least in one post, and will quote posts that have anywhere from 1 to 5 pics in them, and not use a spoiler.

2. someone else that will do the same with but only quote one post. and someone else that does it with another. an so on. again, without spoilers.

in general, the comments contained in these posts about the fit they are quoting, are far from earth-shattering, and they usually do not need the visual of the post they are quoting for one to get the point they are making. or worse, someone who says ZOMG SO AWESOME ITS WORTH SEEING THIS AGAIN FOR TEH 98722849484 TIME!!!!

and when that happens, anytime a regular who comes to catch up on a thread, no matter how many posts per page they read, they end up having to scroll through the same 20 pics over and over again.

and on top of that, in general, whatever 5 words it is that people are trying to actually say about these pics they are quoting, they get buried and lost in all pics. especially when people end up putting their new words within the post they are quoting, before the [/quote, and you have to endeavor to figure out what parts of a post are a new comment and what parts belong to the OP being quoted.

its not a horrible issue, but i think that for many regulars it has become a noticeable PIA in the pic heavy threads. WAYWT, WAYWRN, rock your socks, recent purchases.....

i understand that this is certainly not high up on the list of super important engineering fixes worth spending time and money on. but i think the simplest fix would be to allow a DH, or to make a new DH out of someone trustworthy and who is willing to take the time, to edit these posts and put in spoilers. and even to take charge when someone posts 5 times in a row quoting single pic heavy fits, and combine them to one post with spoilers, and delete the extra posts.

obviously there are times when a quoted post with a pic is better suited without a spoiler, but i think that a person who has been here for long enough and uses proper judgement, can make the call properly and only edit spoilers into posts when appropriate.

i know you replied to my PM about this earlier this week, but since it was brought up again here i thought id elaborate a little more.

I'm feeling like the site isn't connecting me in a deeper way. You know, the spirit circuits and the soul code. It timed out at 3:33 a.m. on Monday morning. Maybe its ramthaspam at work.
