I imagine its not worth it to them to have IT figure a way to let people report thumbs and a way to have them be deleted. sounds like a lot to do just to have to babysit the morons. instead, people should just not be morons.

also, I will crush you with my fat fingers, in a thumb war.

Name the parties responsible, return thumb comments, and if they get taken away again, we'll know who to blame.

Accountability should do the trick.

Exactly. Removing the entire feature over the actions of a few abusers is an overreaction. Thumb comments made SW&D WAYWT better, and I think a very large majority of us would like them back. Whatever abuse there may be of this system cannot possibly be so bad as to warrant its complete destruction.

We disabled comments for thumbs. The thumb comments are not possible to moderate, and were making a "shadow forum" that was not helping the community at all. So, now they are gone. Us the thumbs up if you just want to say "good job on this post". For substantive comments, just use the quote function.

Cheers,

Fok.

We're done with his bullshit. If he pops up, he's gone the instant we spot him. We are not going hunting, but if he comes up on our sights, he's getting popped.

Respectfully, that's not true. Thumb comments helped the community in several ways.

Thumb comments allowed people to leave quick notes both superlative ("nice shirt") and constructive ("needs clunkier boots") that in spite of your suggestion would not be posted otherwise. While it's easy to say "just reply" the reality is that thumb comments provided a quick and easy way to toss out a quick thought that didn't exist before. People will not reply to the thread if they think their comment is too trite. They will, however, use a thumb comment if it's available.

If you're posting fits, you want as much feedback as you can get. Thumb comments allowed for more. People knew how to sort out the troll comments from the actual constructive criticism. We're not so dense that we can't tell the difference.

Thumb comments allowed for new creativity we hadn't seen before. Tcwalter07 is not the only example but he is certainly the only one I need to cite to make this point clear. Even if he's just providing comic relief, this is helpful in building a community (everyone needs a class clown) and it generates views and encourages new content. I can't be the only one who was motivated to keep posting if for no other reason than to see what he'd say next. Thumb comments allowed him to keep his humor confined to a separate area where it wasn't intrusive. It wouldn't be the same if he was bumping the thread to post slang references after every fit.

Finally, even if you believe all the content that was previously directed to thumbs will still get posted as replies, how is this a good thing? The general consensus in WAYWT at any given time is that people prefer to see fits and substantive discussion. If it's not taking the ball down the field, people prefer not to see it. "Nice shirt" doesn't advance the conversation very much, but that doesn't mean it isn't helpful to the person who made the original post. Trying to direct these comments into replies, if successful, will create clutter, which will in turn create backlash. While there is a fair amount of post-thumb chatter in WAYWT at the moment, you can expect this will die down. It's not sustainable as people will eventually get sick of the chatter, start bitching, and there will be a remaining deterrent effect.

So I'd just ask that you take a second look at this. I don't know how this played out in MC, but in SW&D it seemed like it was one of the few features of the new software that everyone liked and even had fun with. I think I'm not alone is saying that not only did we like it but we found it helpful as well.

They didn't appreciate the feature in MC side from what I saw so you'd get 3 people quoting entire series of pics just to say +1 or good etc I guess to even things out instead of teaching them about using the comments box they removed it for all.

You keep moo but ban miran and discard thumbs, well at least can't say the mods aren't meta-trolling everyone lol8[1].gif

We were getting a fair number of complaints about the thumb comments, particularly from the SW&D side. In the end, our inability to moderate the comments is what tipped the scales. I do realize that there are good reasons for the comments in the thumbs sections, but felt that on the whole, that they were doing more bad than good. Remember, not so long ago, there were no thumbs at all.

This. We couldn't delete thumbs comments, and it was too much of a hassle to engineer notifications, etc... As for the suggestion of self-policing - it's a nice concept, in theory, but we found, in practice, that it doesn't work if there aren't actual moderator powers.

SVB - i think you misunderstood fok. not that the thumb comments as a whole were not helping the community, but rather, the shadow community that was forming was not helping the forum.

personally, i like thumb comments, and i would like to have them. but i have seen pretty nasty shit in there, throughout the forum. hurtful shit, that people only said because they had the safety of some cover in a thumb comment. i dont mean jokes, and ball busting trolling. there was some mean comments in there.

that being said, i can understand from the mods point of view, why they just pulled them. i would certainly prefer a better solution, but i dont have one that would be time or cost efficient on the mods part.

edit - already spelled out by fok while i was typing this up.

Lulz, you were one of the main reasons that the thumb comments were removed. 90% of your comments were in thumbs. How can people have discussions if you say things to them and ask them questions in a place where they can't reply?
