Great success. In the former case, the troll was surprised and thanked me for the response, at which point the nastiness in the thread ended. In the latter, the poster responded to my query and made himself look much, much sillier than I ever could have with a sarcastic comment. I like this method, and intend to use it more in the future.
I think shibbel is employing this method as well. It has made him much more tolerable.

why is javyn still there?

If you won't ban him, then at least make dubiously honored work so I can exclude him from my threads, I might try a foray.

Hi guys.
I don't post much, but I am an avid reader. I don't go to DT or CE for the most part.

May I suggest that you take a look at "The Bilge" over at woodenboat.com? It's a very similar subforum.

If you examine it, you'll find a lot of similar behavior as what you speak of now. There are many, many hurt members (no, not THAT member), and quite a few people who left the forum because of the insults and personal attacks. There is often spillover as posters bring that nastiness outside of the Bilge and into other, more legitimate posts.

Until recently, Bilge threads dominated the 'What's New' search, making the forum all but unusable for someone interested in the primary purpose of the forum.

Just an observations. I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. Thanks for a great site, I learn a lot here.

People that develop a problem with DT are usually the folks that can dish it out but not take it. I say this as someone that has had multiple threads started about him with the sole purpose of people ragging on me. And yet...apparently I'm in an evil cabal to drive people insane...I think people often just see what they want to see.

My eyes still hurt.

But you did run point on my wake, which I don't think I ever thanked you for. Thanks. It was nice meeting you at Ed's last TS.

FWIW, I think the insights from Teacher and Rube are priceless.

I still think Teacher is Howard from Andy's. smile.gif

If you look at the owners of this site, they are SW&D all day which, I think, explains a lot.

Do you think it could be upgraded back to "dive bar" status if some ground rules were set? For example, "we accept a fair amount of idiocy, but xxxxx is where we draw the line" could be made clear, and create an environment that is still kind of insane but not quite as bad as it has gotten.

as a person who spends a fair amount of time in DT, i am not sure that such a line can be drawn. i think as a mod (you, not me), you will find it necessary to be active in that subforum on a regular basis, and try your best to objectively decide where a poster has said or done something that is beyond the pale.

i have taken a fair amount of shit in my day. some deserved, some not, imo. and still, i do not agree with the sentiment that DT should be trashed. if you really dont like it, dont go into it. aside from some minimal DT to CE or GC crossover, i dont find that people who keep their noses out of DT get any kind of shit thrown their way.

regarding DT sucking, i think a lot of that has to do with creativity, and peoples mood, and weather or not they find the time to be active there. there are days or weeks when its great, and other times just as lengthy, if not more, where its a royal bore or shitstorm. not to mention, there is a vast chasm in the type of humor that the different types of posters there enjoy. at its best, there are topics there that all constituents can enjoy, and its a great time. at its worst its, well, i think we have all seen that. as i said earlier, the more real effort that people attempt to put in there, the better it will be.

just my opinion.

Simple solution for the DT problem people have been focussing on (which is not the only one). People who don't like being picked on can complain to the mods and they can asked for or be given a new status - call it Special Flower. Anyone who has that status, which will be displayed, can't be picked on and can't attack anyone else. Violations on either side will be punished.

This is an awesome idea.

^ so it will be the DT mods job to keep the special flower from being defiled?

Btw, I started a thread for nurturing all of our special flowers today. http://www.styleforum.net/t/309265/itt-we-build-the-self-esteem-of-the-poster-above-you/0_30 Please come and have your flower bloom.

From being picked, but yes. They will be ghostly flowers, seen but neither touching nor touched.

Great in theory, but I think a nightmare to police in practice.

How about this - Mutually Assured Destruction. Butthurt people can time out anyone they feel is picking on them, but they will have to take the same timeout of their account and IP range(s). Circumvention earns permaban.

We need to form IRL gangs. Then have a dance-off. That should solve all of our problems here and in life.

j, since you are here, please make my custom title "unbannable" smile.gif

Too easy to game. The Cabal, as an example, could take turns banning the same person so he is effectively perma-banned.
