A fit without shoes is not a fit.

I did know a guy in college who spent warm months walking shoeless on campus. I later found out he had gone down a math rabbit hole. a cautionary tale.

There's no hard rule, but in general I'll go with no break for slim pants and lots of break for wider pants --- but there are variations, such as wearing slim chinos stacked like jeans or rolling up full-leg cuffs. it kinda also depends on the rest of the outfit and your general style.

thank you very much, parker, much appreciated. as i like a more tapered chino, with a smaller, but not super tight, leg opening, i think a very small amount of break is what im looking for. not hovering over the shoe, but not pooling/stacked on it either.

I think this is a big area where MC differes from SW&D.  MC tends to want that "perfect break," while SW&D usually goes for something more visually interesting there, such as a cuff, cropped hem, or stacking.

A lot of the truly great designers excel at making clothes that are "a little off."  IMO this is an essential element of casual wear.

you are definitely correct, and i think what we think looks good depends on what we have trained ourselves to like to see. i see a lot of interesting hems here that i think look great on the wearers, but even in my casual fits, they still trend towards MC i think, and an interesting cuff would likely feel out of place for me.

id be open to trying a lil stack or a cuff, but a crop would be too next level for me. id feel like i was wearing ladies capris. also, for my more rotund build, it might look dumb.
