I had trouble ordering coffee in NYC recently (I'm Australian) - I asked for a strong skinny latte which is double shot ristretto with low fat milk - all I got was blank stares - though ordering in Dean & Deluca was my first mistake.
I actually found the coffee from Saturday Surf NYC to be very good - but they use the best coffee machine in the biz La Maracozza.
I wish there was a filter for completely off-topic posts. Also, I don't even drink coffee (or tea) but it seems like for most people it's rarely actually enjoyed and more something to complain about.

time to make two divergent threads, ***the official baller caffeinated beverages [$1500/oz minimum]*** and SW&D Hot Cocoa
but +1 i like to sit and enjoy what i consider a good coffee or tea and like someone said the process of making and refining it is fun for me, just like with putting together outfits i guess. am comfortable [in my elitism?] but wouldn't want to impose my views on others and just offer opinion should it be asked of me.
I'm not a hot beverage drinker and i don't like coffee, but I like a cup of hot chocolate mixed with a spoon of peanut butter, occasionally (during the holidays)

I probably shouldn't bother responding to someone who is attempting to generalize about all of North America, but.....
You can get hand press (hand pull) at many places in Seattle, I am sure in SF, also Portland probably has a million of them with shade-grown, cruelty-free, free-range beans, etc.
