You don't understand....the United States has declared war on carbohydrates.

Bread, rice...especially "white" rice, pasta...these are UnAmerican foods that must be destroyed.

The American elites will tolerate some carbohydrates like quinoa, spelt, faro, kamut, amaranth, etc because of their elite status in the food world...but for the non-elite, these are just too weird, plus unaffordable...

Unfortunately, as much as I love America, the war on starch has been only as effective as the war on Terror in the national fitness department...so I'm not sure where they'll go with it...a popular statistic that is often quoted:  America--with it's war on starch--national obesity is 60% obesity....Italy, overrun with starch--national obesity rate is 40%.....

Did anybody read that article about fasting in this month's Harper's? It was incredibly captivating, and sort of inspiring shog[1].gif

Makes me want to try it but I worry about hiding the fact that I'm fasting from the people I know when I turn down all offers for food or drink / socializing in that way for a few weeks.

Fasting is so hard, I've only been able to go a day. It becomes literally all you think about

No, but I'm always skeptical about fasting.

I fasted once, for a week...not the Lent fasting or a similar prescribed thing...just avoiding food during the day, eating a small meal at night...

I actually gained a lot of weight...people tell me it's because of water retention(?)

I think if you fasted but with lots of vigorous activity during the day, you'd have different results but don't quote me on that....

People think carbs are evil because if you cut them entirely you'll lose like 5-10lb in a week because you'll lose water weight and chances are it'll come off your stomach. Also theres probably an article somewhere that says they cause cancer/heart disease/ are ancestors didn't eat them/cave men are amazing

Tween if you want to fast do intermittent fasting, google lean gains, if you put your fast so its during the day time when your working you probably won't need to avoid social occasions.

Oh no, I'm talking about literally ingesting absolutely nothing but pure water for at least a week

There have been plenty of times I've gone a day or two doing that but I'd like to try for longer, just to humor myself really and see if it does make my feel better in the end

Yes, I suppose you could photosynthesise your own glucose, or something...Remember that guy who claimed, in the summer of 2010 just after the BP oil spill, to have developed a car engine that runs on water...and then it turned it out it could only run on Gulf of Mexico water?

Reading SW&D talk about H&B is like reading to MC talk about SW&D.

I'm not interested in health benefits (or detriments) or any of that, I just want to humor myself alien.gif

and yes I realize I mentioned I want to see if I feel any better in the end, but it's not the reasoning behind it.

anyways this isn't the place to discuss this, I was just curious if anyone else had read it
