The "dad jeans" would have looked better if they had a little more length.

The wash alone isn't what makes dad jeans dad jeans, guys.

I don't mind washed out jeans if the cut, texture and wear looks cool... they can be 90's retro without looking like Jerry Seinfeld... it has everything to do with the cut to me. in fact my mother got my father some dark Levi's for X-Mas because she was fed up with this "dad jeans"... she likes them but they look the same to me, just darker!

The fit and the wash I think.  Monochromatic faded blue (no distressing) is hard to pull off without a dad-jean effect, IMHO.

 

It's more the fit. Just like how MOM jeans are about the top block seemingly engulfing half of the woman's torso and not the wash of those jeans.

Yup, definitely both fit and wash.
