It depends on the faculty and the size of the conference. My experience is that no one will give a fuck what you're wearing as long as you're not in shorts and flip flops. So just dress how you would in an office.

Pretty much. It depends on discipline (I am in a social science), but for the most part as long as your clothing is clear of food stains and drool you should be fine. There is an infamous prof in my department who supposedly gave a conference presentation wearing two different shoes. Any business casual, no mater how ill-fitting, wouldn't raise an eyebrow.
