The thing about shooting against a pure white wall with a flash pointed directly at it is that the white wall will reflect light back a lot more than the subject so if you get the exposure correct it will look pure white while the subject will be properly exposed. In the case of these pictures of myself I have been posting I have been setting them up pretty quickly in my office so the wall didnt come out pure white. I then took the photo into photoshop and dodged out the white of the wall and once I have it pure white I do a levels adjustment to bring it down by 10-15% because I think it looks a little strange if its totally white.
If you have any camera with manual controls you should be able to set up something similar pretty easily.
In the case of the Drake photo its a similar idea but I did it bit more high tech.
