Pipes: Sign of a true jackass or viable smoking alternative?

So I used to smoke cigars fairly regularly but I can't really tolerate them now. I have about 10 pipes that I inherited from my grandfather. There's some nice stuff in there, they are all from the 1940's and 50's. No meerschaum (due to an irrational hatred of people from the caucasus and Turkey which I won't get into) - all fairly unobtrusive, smaller wood models. I've had them boxed up but was looking though them the other day, wondering why more of us don't smoke pipes. Just for the sake of discussion, I'm curious what others think. Also, I don't plan on smoking full bowls - I recall my grandfather filling only 1/4 or so, and just smoking a few puffs while reading the paper. I'd probably do the same.

What do we think of what, your hobby?

Never had the chance but thought they always smelled amazing. If your in the privacy of your home reading the paper, smoking a pipe I wouldnt think of you as a jackass.

At a bar with an ironic t-shirt, fixed gear bike and moustache? Then yes, your a hipster jackass.

Can't smoke one in any public place in a lot of the US so you don't have worry about being judged anyway. Enjoy them in the privacy of your backyard.

During my one year of law school I had a part-time job in a tobacco store. During that period I learned a lot about cigars and pipes, but mainly at the time I fancied myself a pipe smoker (at age 23). My main take away from that time was that they were a horrible pain in the ass.

With cigars, you buy them, you store them, you light them and you throw them away. With pipes there is lots of attendant packing and cleaning and one must have all the accoutrements on hand to enjoy them which generally means either carrying a pouch or only smoking them at home. Plus if you buy new pipes they will tend to smoke pretty hot until you get the "cake" properly built up inside the bowl; which is no easy process. It can take some real effort to properly season a pipe, especially if you're not smoking a few bowls a day.

Anyway, I eventually gave it up and switched to cigars (which I smoke less and less these days). I haven't smoked a pipe now in over 20 years. For a 23 year old they probably did look a bit pretentious, though I wasn't really concerned with that at the time.

My dad smoked cigars, and my grandfather smoked pipes. I hate the smell of cigars, but pipes smell really good. Almost everyone I know says the same thing about the smell of pipe smoke.

Why is that? What is it about pipe tobacco or pipes that makes the smoke smell pleasant?

I enjoy a periodic pipe in the winter time. I enjoy them very much, but particularly in certain weather. In warm weather, I always favor cigars.

Maybe just the tobacco used or something? Pipes just smell refined, you know? And usually I smoke a cigar for way too long and my mouth tastes like sack for days. Ever smoked a hookah? Smoothest, tastiest smoke Ive had.

Because most people smoke flavored (cased as it is called in pipe lingo) tobacco, especially if they are going to be around people. As in cigars, I find that while flavored tobacco has it's place, it leaves me feeling unsatisfied. A lot of pipe smokers tend to progress into natural, uncased, pipe tobacco. In addition there is a particular type of pipe tobacco called Latakia that most people find pretty foul smelling.

Lot's of true pipe smokers will, over time, develop their own blend. Very few people I knew back in teh day would smoke straight Latakia, but would tend to use it in some sort of blend with other tobaccos to add a bit of heft.
