Many ties sold in Europe, even from the most conservative brands such as Charvet, are 3.25" wide. I would think that the standard over there is between 8 and 9 cm.

I never thought Manton for a 4" tie

Measuring a tie at its point is a bit arbitrary, as it does very little to describe the cut of the tie. I would argue that the width just below(6in.) the knot has more impact on the look of a tie than the measurements of its lower extremities. My ties vary in cut depending on the cut of the jacket. And of course, lapel width should be adressed.

For a three button jacket I like a narrower cut tie, to show some linen.

For a two button jacket I like a wider cut tie to fill up space.

Such is the method to my madness.

I like a 2"-2.5" tie. Keep in mind, I am really thin, so 3" or more looks pretty ridiculous on me.

I think a post on AAAC identified 3.5 as the most trad of widths

Trad tends narrower than that, I think 3.25" or less would be more like it.

IMO, the only ones that look good that narrow are knits.

3 to 3.5, depending on the outfit. 4 gets too wide. I am a 39 or 40R, narrowly built.

Wider things I might wear under a V neck sweater.

Ideally, I would have opted for 3 3/8", but that wasn't a choice. I went with a slightly larger 3.5" tie since I own the greatest number of that particular width.

Actually, I really only wear knits. I do have a few non-knit ties, but I never wear them.
