Vita Mix or Blendtec?

Just started a rice cooker thread but I also need a blender. I'll be making drinks and rice every day while on a bodybuilding routine. Are the Vita Mix and Blendtec blenders worth it? And is there anything else worth looking at?

Vitamix is the best.
But really, if you're just making protein shakes and shit like that, there really isn't any point in spending more than $40 for a sturdy black and decker blender.

My gf covets a Vitamix but then she is into raw food and wants to blend up all sorts of veggies all the time. As kwilk said, not needed for protein shakes.

For my protein shakes I use a coffee grinder to grind up raw oats. I put that into a shaker bottle with protein and that's good enough. I need the blender for meals in a smoothie form. I'd be blending up ice and frozen fruits with it. Hows the 500 watt Waring Pro? I saw it at target for like 70 bucks. Would that be good enough?

I don't see how you guys can eat raw oats in shakes...so nasty.

If you grind it up in a coffee grinder you don't taste it. It's an easy way to get a lot of complex carbs. Much easier then eating tons of brown rice all day. A protein shake with milk, whey and casein, and oats is an easy 600+ calories. Add some peanut butter and it's 800+. Really easy way to add calories to your diet if you're bulking.

I've ground it in a blender, and thought it was fowl. *shrug. I don't mind eating oatmeal though, I really like it so no biggie. I do like grinding flax seeds in my coffee grinder and adding to my shakes though.

But most of the time it's just whey, water, and a little lecithin.

If you are looking for something to just whip up a shake get a Magic Bullet.

I know it seems like infomerical bullshit but I picked mine up about five of years ago at Bed Bath and Beyond on a whim for the exact reason you want a blender. It has been serving me well for all these years. It is great because you can make everything in one little cup and is easy to clean up.

If I can use this to make hummus I'll buy one today.

Are those cups really big enough to fit all that?

I highly recommend against getting a blender if you intend on using it to make protein shakes, as it will whip air into your protein shake and may cause terrible gas. A better and much cheaper solution is a blender bottle which you can get online or at a GNC. I think I got mine for about 8 bucks. (A blender bottle is essentially just a standard protein shaker with a wire whisk ball to mix your drink)

Good for just protein and water/milk, but:

Not so much for that above, especially the frozen fruit part. Jbreen1, I have this Waring: http://www.amazon.com/Waring-PBB204-...ref=pd_sim_k_1 So far has been fine with frozen fruit. Haven't tried oats, but it did perform adequately when I mistakenly purchased whole coffee beans recently. I think it may have started to leak slightly toward the base, though. Back when I purchased it I considered the Vitamix, but decided it wouldn't get enough use to justify the cost. I've been using it a bit more lately; not sure what I'll do if it's an issue/not repairable. Probably spring for the Vitamix and be pissed that I didn't make that choice a couple of years ago.

What sort of use would you consider worthy of springing for the Vitamix? I was under the impression that crushing ice/frozen fruits was one of the tougher tasks for a blender.
