What I know about these "seconds" that you have no clue about explains the reason why some boots look like there's not a thing wrong with them while others are trash that should be burned.

Judging from the extreme attention to detail that people on this thread have, and the willingness to return firsts for very minor flaws, it should come as no surprise that there exists lots of seconds with hardly anything wrong with them. I'm not saying this is wrong or right, just that the chances of getting an almost first quality second is pretty good.

Crane's probably shouldn't rag on people buying these up like crazy either, I'm sure many people who buy them would never touch them at retail, which is $400 in Toronto btw. It's not like you're losing customers. And you probably shouldn't judge what people are willing to put up with in their purchases either. You're just coming across as a really bitter man.

I totally understand the reasoning for your concern. I understand thinking it, but putting it down in writing just kind of looks bad in my opinion. I bought a pair and I did it on the sole fact that I wanted to try a pair out with making a $355 commitment.

You would be correct in your assumption. Some of the seconds aren't seconds at all. They'll have a scuff or two from being bounced around in the box during transit.

As far as being bitter is concerned you would be wrong about that. I have done my share of deal hunting. Sometimes it works out. Most of the time though I can't say that when looking for that steal of a deal where it's all about paying the least amount as possible. Yeah the thrill is there but down the road that tends to fade. Then you're left with that constant reminder that the deal wasn't such a deal after all. I don't like that feeling and I would imagine no one does. It's more about smart money and crying once then anything else. The difference between buying a first quality item or a second in this case is not about the money because in the scheme of things we're not talking a ton of money here. For most of us the difference would mean not going out to dinner a few times or hitting a bar/club all night.

I don't understand the problem. The sales clearly stated that they were seconds. The buyers expected defects of some sort, and on top of that STP accept returns. How does this affect the general perception of Wolverine?

See, if you'd said it the way you did in the second paragraph, I don't think people would be ragging on you as much. Thanks for the reasoned response.

On a happier note, as a PSA, J. Lawrence's Khakis in Carmel has a small number of first quality 1,000 mile boots being blown out for $49. I picked up a black pair in 8.5D today. They had maybe 3 browns and 3 blacks left. I think all of them were size 10 and up. Try giving them a call and see if they've got your size and will do a phone order. Kiyoshi was very helpful over there. Sidenote: Scored a $1,000 Brioni sweater for $49 as well. Pretty crazy deals...
